Two of the most liked movie genres are science fiction and comedy. A lot of people enjoy watching mixed genres, so today I will be talking about one of the best science fiction/comedy TV-series and why it is engaging.

The TV-series I am talking about is Rick and Morty. Rick and Morty is an adult-oriented animation similar to The Simpsons, but because it includes sci-fi, it has a widespread audience. It’s a story based around two main characters’ adventures. One of them is a mad scientist who’s also the grandpa of Morty. Rick is the comedy and the dark side of the show. The other main character is Morty, “a typical loser”. The two are very different in a lot of ways, but together they make a great team. The show includes parallel universes, extraterrestrial life, etc. It’s a TV-series that skits on daily life problems. The show includes a lot of pop culture references, and even in some episodes, they openly talk about it. The TV-series looks upon family relationships as well.

Rick and Morty use a story circle to create engaging and endless storylines. Every episode is different but continues in its own unique way. The show creators use the same Story Circle Formula as The Simpsons. Dan Harmon’s story circle is his “attempt to remove all the hard and repeated work from the task of breaking a story.” His “embryo” allows him and the rest of the Rick and Morty writing staff to take characters through an entire arc that changes who they are by the end.

The eight steps are:

1. You – a character you can identify with

2. Need – they have some a need or wish

3. Go – they cross a threshold that changes the story’s direction

4. Search – go through trials

5. Find – they locate it

6. Take – it overthrows them

7. Return – they come back to the world they started in

8. Change – they’re not the same
